About the book:
Can you give us the synopsis of your book?
When her gran passes away, the only item left to Lou is a small wooden box. Although it’s not the car that her sister, Cindy, receives, Lou knows it could have been worse. She could have gotten Gran’s collection of toenails. When Lou opens the box and a guy the size of a stick of gum falls out; she changes her mind – the nail clippings would have been better.
Not a day goes by that Lou doesn’t wish she could shove that guy back in the box and pretend she’d never laid eyes on him. Because of him, she discovered Gran was a sorceress and Cindy is a witch and all these years they have been keeping Lou’s magic locked away “for her own safety.” Without the magic she’s vulnerable to whoever, or whatever, is after her. With it, she’s a target for a fate worth than death.

Do you have a favorite Character? Why?
I love all of the characters in my books. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t write them. Haha. For my new book, The Box, I’d have to say my favorite character is Cindy, or Sin as she prefers. Sin was only supposed to have a small role in the story, but as soon as she entered Lou’s bedroom with her bright red hair and bossy attitude, there was no stopping her. While she has a lot of faults, such as being selfish, her self-confidence and fearlessness are traits I admire, and it’s all of those characteristics that make her so much fun to write.
What do you hope readers will get out of your book?
My goal is always to create something entertaining. Books should be fun and allow readers to go on a journey they might not be able to in real life. Anything more the readers might get out of the story is just gravy.
What/who inspires you?
Oh so many things inspire me. Books, music, movies, television shows, art, friends, family, random objects around my house. Everything is inspiration if you’re able to look at it the right way. But after the initial spark of inspiration that gives me an idea for a story, what helps me write is a good soundtrack. Right now, my favorite is “Doctor Who Series 5.”
Hardest aspect of writing? Easiest?
The hardest part of writing is everything. And the easiest is everything. Haha. But honestly, it depends on the day for me. Some days nothing can get in my way and I can write thousands of words that barely need editing. Other days I can barely force five words onto the page. I love writing dialog, and usually I find scenes with a lot of talking get written faster than descriptive scenes. The hardest thing for me is finicky editing, such as word choices and grammar. I have a hard time with spelling, and have to concentrate to remember how to spell even easy words.
Who is your writing hero?
When I was a teen, I would have said Tamora Pierce. I loved her stories, and they are what got me writing in the first place. But lately my writing hero is a lot closer to home. Patti Larsen is another young adult paranormal author from my area who has taken the self publishing route. Her ability to write interesting characters and action packed stories is impressive. But what I really admire is her enthusiasm. Not only does she have the energy to write one to three books a month, she is incredibly gracious to her readers, and has passion abound to share with other writers.
What’s next for you?
I’ve already started the sequel to The Box, which will be called The Sword. It’s going to follow the main character, Lou as she gets a little older and a little more experienced with her magic.
I’m always writing, so I have a few other stories started and many more ideas stored away for when I have time. One of those novels is a sequel to my debut, Magic High. It’s set in the same high school but follows a new character with a completely different perspective of the magic and “reality” television show that occurred in the first book.
In other words, I’ve only just begun, and there’s lots more coming from me soon.
One outrageous goal for the future?
To become the next J.K. Rowling. Except without having to deal with the press and the pressures she has for each new book. Haha. My true goal at this point is to continue writing, always developing my skill and creating books that hopefully will find an audience.
Advise for other writers?
Write. It’s that simple. There are so many things that might be holding you back, from the lack of time to your own self doubt. What you need to be able to do is trust yourself. If you really want to write, give yourself permission to. It might mean you have to leave some dirty dishes in the sink for a bit, but that’s okay. Allow yourself to write and allow yourself to enjoy the entire process.
Random questions:
Sweet/salty?
Why not both? A good balance is delicious.
Beach, plains or mountains?
I grew up on a flat, tree covered island with some of the best beaches in the world. I’ll always feel most comfortable when I’m near the water.
Online, letter or in person?
It all depends on what needs to be said. It’s easier for me to find the right words if I’m writing them down, so I often find online the easiest for getting a point across. However, if I just want to talk to a friend, I prefer to do it in person.
Ebook or print?
Oh jeeze. I will always have a soft spot for holding a book in my hand and enjoying the look and feel of the whole package. But there are so many benefits of ebooks. Can I say both again?
I guess that’s it. I just wanted to say thank you so much for having me on your blog during this tour. It was a pleasure!
