Kiera's Quest: Awakenings by Kristy Brown

Kiera's Quest: Awakenings

Meet Kiera, a pretty, intelligent, and talented girl, brought up by her uncle, and abandoned by her parents. Life is as normal as she believes it to be, apart from the deep ache inside her, telling her she’s different. For years, Kiera had dreams where she ventures into a different reality. She’s not alone; a presence is always there, keeping her safe, yet she feels vulnerable, and hunted.

Zakk, Prince of Zantar, is under the Witch Queen’s spell as she tries to take over his world. He crosses paths with Kiera, and their fates are entwined.

As their journey unravels, she learns that she is not the only one affected by this prince. Who is on her side? Will she find out why she has been chosen? How can someone so young, defeat such evil? Will she find the strength to save the ones closest to her? Will this be Kiera’s only Quest?

My thoughts:
I would like to start this review by saying this is an amazing start to a series!! I've been debating for a couple of days on what to write without having spoilers... And I've finally decided to just tell you how great this short introduction is! I literally sat down and read it in about an hour and loved it from page one! I can't wait to read the next part of Kiera's story :)

I absolutely LOVED this story! It was one of those on the edge of your chair, locking your doors and windows at night type of reads!! Reading this book has made me definitly want to read more from the author. And I will never be able to think about "Dove Hunting" in the same way again! If you want to know what I'm talking about you HAVE to get this book!! This is a must read for all horror/thriller lovers :)

Through her grandfather, she learns her mother was a vampire hunter. In fact, her entire family is descended from the powerful bloodlines of vampire hunters. Chloe agrees to join the family she has never known for one reason only: Chloe vows to kill the vampire responsible for her mother’s murder.

With vengeance in her soul, Chloe is even more determined to follow through on her vow when she discovers the true identity of her enemy and how he is connected to her

The Vampire Hunter's Daughter is the first in a series of short stories by Jennifer Malone Wright.

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed this first segment in this series. The author skillfully pulled you in and told you a great story. I was hooked from page one and honestly would have gone crazy if I didn't have part two to follow up with. This segment has a ton of suspense, action, and downright crazy fight scenes. I recommend this book to all who like a bit of a twist on the normal vampire/hunter story :)

War within Two Worlds: A Warrior's Spiritual Journey by Maxime Antoine

War within Two Worlds: A Warrior's Spiritual Journey

Ountam was a warrior. He had spent his life engaging in battle. This made it very hard for him to accept the teachings of his Maat priestess, who encouraged him to live by the principles of love and peace.

As a defender of the Temple, he sought to protect this way of life. Yet when faced with a difficult encounter in battle, he lets his anger get the better of him. He fights to kill rather than to paralyze and hopefully rehabilitate his opponents. It is this rage that leads to his demise and his journey to the next plane.

Now Ountam must learn to control his emotions so he can lead his community in the ultimate battle against the Dark Deceased. It is a monumental challenge, but the power of love must prevail in order to bring peace to the next plane and light to its inhabitants.

Oceans of Red Volume Two By Willow Cross

Cover for 'Oceans of Red Volume Two'

Remy's saga continues as she comes to terms with who she is and what she will become.

My thoughts:
I really loved this continuation of Ocean's of Red Volume One. Without saying any spoilers, all I can tell you is that there is a lot suspense, action, and adventure being had by Remy and her sister, Shane. They are definitely on the right track, in my opinion, and I can't wait to see what happens in Ocean's of Red Volume 3. This is definitely a series so you must read Volume one to understand what's going on. It's a good thing you can get it for FREE by going here ( ;) I recommend this series to all that like a little twist on the whole Zombie apocalypse scene :)

Hope for Animals and Their World: How Endangered Species Are Being Rescued from the Brink by Jane Goodall, Thane Maynard (Contributor), Gail Hudson (Contributor)

At a time when animal species are becoming extinct on every continent and we are confronted with bad news about the environment nearly every day, Jane Goodall, one of the world's most renowned scientists, brings us inspiring news about the future of the animal kingdom. With the insatiable curiosity and conversational prose that have made her a bestselling author, Goodall-along with Cincinnati Zoo Director Thane Maynard-shares fascinating survival stories about the American Crocodile, the California Condor, the Black-Footed Ferret, and more; all formerly endangered species and species once on the verge of extinction whose populations are now being regenerated.

Interweaving her own first-hand experiences in the field with the compelling research of premier scientists, Goodall illuminates the heroic efforts of dedicated environmentalists and the truly critical need to protect the habitats of these beloved species. At once a celebration of the animal kingdom and a passionate call to arms, HOPE FOR ANIMALS THEIR WORLD presents an uplifting, hopeful message for the future of animal-human coexistence.

I purchased this audiobook after hearing about the author in one of my Anthropology classes. This book is definitely an eye-opener as to HOW involved one can be in nature and how "easy" it could be to reverse the effects of our "footprint"...if only we would try... It is a good read (listen) for all that are interested in the topic, conservation of our wildlife, and in Anthropology in general.

Deadly Defiance (A Stan Turner Mystery #10) by William Manchee

A young mother complains to Stan that she’s been abandoned by her husband, left penniless, and deeply in debt. Maureen Thompson is livid with her husband and suggest she’d be better off if he were dead, so she could collect on his sizeable life insurance policy. Stan cautions her not to think in those terms and, before she leaves, promises to develop a strategy for effectively dealing with her seemingly unsurmountable problems. Several weeks later Maureen calls Stan from the City Jail where she’s been arrested for the alleged murder of her husband. Since Paula is between murder cases, Stan assigns the case to her. She is elated with the assignment until she finds out Rodney Thompson isn’t her first husband to fall victim to a seven-inch ice pick.

While Paula is busy trying to prove Maureen Thompson isn’t the Ice Pick Killer, Stan and Jodie try to help an illegal Hispanic woman obtain redress for the murder of her husband at the hands of a sweatshop owner with ties to a Mexican drug cartel. It’s a dangerous case so Stan and Jodie team up with the Dallas Police and the FBI to attempt to bring the abusive employer to justice. But just when they think they have Icaro Melendez on the ropes he strikes back with a vengeance making Stan and Jodie wish they’d never taken on the case. But there is no going back now, so they press on, praying they’ll survive a final confrontation with the ruthless cartel.

I won this audiobook on Goodreads First Reads. I didn't think that I would be able to get into this book being that it was #10 in a series, but it was very easy to associate with. The characters were very well developed and the story line was so well written that I would definitely be interested in reading the others in the series and recommend reading at least this one to all who love a good murder mystery :)

The Soul's Sonata by Rachael Wade

At only twenty-five years old, Emily has lost her sense of worth and her identity has faded into a distant chasm. Abused, isolated, and a former shell of herself, she is trapped in her mind and in her music. Yet she has a dream—the only thing that reminds her she is still alive.

I absolutely LOVED this short story. It shows that if you have the strength to let a wonderful distraction take you away, you can. Emily's use of music and gardening as her escape from reality is a way that hits close to home. This story definitely gives hope to those in similar situations!! I can't wait to read more from the Author :)

Wicked Little Lies Part 2 by Tanya Contois

Jocelyn has just turned 18 but instead of having the big celebration she was looking forward to for so long she finds out that not only is she not fully human but the people who raised her aren’t her real parents. Instead of staying to listen to her parents’ explanation she takes off and ends up going to live with her biological parents Jacoby and Adeline. Jocelyn quickly makes new friends and gains a potential boyfriend named Sonny but things are far from safe when Kane, another cambion makes his presence known. Now Jocelyn is left with many questions but few answers. What does the future hold for her and will she end up with Sonny? Only time will tell.

I received this book from the author, whom I met through Bee's Knees Reviews ( After finding out that not only has her whole life up until her 18th birthday has been a lie, but also finds out that she is betrothed to a major jerk of a guy! Kane keeps pulling her into his dreams in a horribly failed attempt at winning Jocelyn over.  I don't think Kane knows what he has gotten himself into. This another great part and I can't wait to read the next part of the book!!!

The Spirit Box by JH Glaze

When Walt Turner's mother died, he inherited her apartment and the antique shop below. After losing his job due to the treachery of a co-worker, The Spirit Box calls to him from the darkness of the shop with an offer of revenge.

Lured by the promise of ultimate power and eternal life by the prisoner inside the box, Walt agrees to help it gather the final spirits it requires to return to human form.

John Hazard is investigating a series of murders and missing persons in this otherwise quiet town. His perceptions of reality are about to be altered in a life changing confrontation that will force him beyond the boundaries of darkness and ancient evil.

It is a spiraling descent into madness, where you may have everything you desire, if only you are willing to sacrifice all that you believe.

When you look into The Spirit Box, be prepared to have more than your breath taken away.

I won this book in a giveaway and received it from the author. I have to say that this is one of the most interesting books I have read to date. Walt finds The Spirit Box in his departed mother's antique shop after having several dreams about where it was located. He is unable to open it himself but soon the box starts talking to him and convinces him to help the box finish his quest. After an unfortunate incident at work, Walt has no guilt in bringing a co-worker to the box. He is required to bring more people after that and with the final person is accepted by the box, Walt turns on it and tries to destroy it to no avail. Unfortunately (or fortunately...however you want to look at it...) John Hazard is assigned to the cases of the missing persons and comes upon Walt at a most inconvenient time! you will have to get a copy of this book to understand what I'm talking about ;) This is truly a great read and I can't wait to read the author's next book, NorthWest. I recommend The Spirit Box to everyone that has had a co-worker that has done something you didn't like. This is definitely the ultimate revenge book :)

My Brother's Keeper by Brian Bowman

In the criminal underworld of Detroit, power is the most sought-after currency. The three Martin brothers, Tony, Mike, and Dennis, know how to play the game and appreciate their position in the drug world. Their bond as brothers – the only family they have left – is unending; however, one night alters their lives beyond their wildest imaginations, changing everything in a major way.

On that one night, Mike, thinking he can handle a routine drug deal alone, finds himself attacked and mauled by three gigantic dog-like creatures. Barely escaping with his life, the next morning he learns Tony experienced a similar experience when attacked by his date, a famous rapper, whom he swears transformed into Satan himself. Although Mike’s wounds heal surprisingly quickly, Tony is not so lucky, and his passing brings about an unexpected transformation in the brothers’ lives.

As unexplained deaths mount and sightings of Tony, whose body has disappeared from the morgue, are reported, the remaining brothers start to come under pressure both by the cops and their rivals. Will the brothers survive their newfound existence, or will they prove to be their own worst enemies? In a world where nothing is quite as it seems, this otherworldly tale of murder, revenge, and brotherly love questions whether there is room for loyalty in the quest for money, power, and respect.

I actually enjoyed this book a bit more than I probably should have. It was a fast paced book that kept my interest very easily. Sure there are a few typos and slang terms that a few may not be accustomed to, but that did not detract from the reading in my opinion. I would definitely recommend this book if you want a quick read.

A Soul To Steal by Rob Blackwell

The debut novel from award-winning journalist Rob Blackwell, A Soul to Steal balances suspense, horror, action and humor, building to a gripping and unforgettable conclusion. For readers who enjoy Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and Jim Butcher, A Soul to Steal is the perfect autumn novel.

I received this book from the author, whom I met through Bee's Knees Reviews ( First off I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a great rendition of the traditional "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and was a great book to read around the Halloween time. I was completely hooked on the book and was able to read it very easily. I'm super impressed with the writing style of the author and can't wait for him to publish more stories :) This is definitely a must read for those that are addicted to twists of classic "fairytales."

Nine Frights : Stories of Terror and The Supernatural by Jeffrey J. Mariotte

Nine Frights

Janey in Amber: A woman visiting her mother’s house encounters some uncomfortable realities about her own life.

Santos del Infierno: In a tale set in the world of Clive Barker’s “Hellbound Hearts” (Hellraiser), a man loses his family and gains a new friend—one with a dark agenda.

The Strip: At the edge of a city plagued by zombies, a small community gathers to try to watch out for one another’s humanity. But when it goes, it’s gone...

Nine short works of terror by award-winning novelist and comic book writer Jeffrey J. Mariotte (The Slab, The Devil’s Bait, the Dark Vengeance Quartet, Missing White Girl, River Runs Red, Cold Black Hearts, four 30 Days of Night novels, and more). Some of these stories have appeared in Hellbound Hearts, The Stories in Between, and Zombie Cop, while others are published here for the first time.

My thoughts:
I really liked the format of this book. You were introduced to 3 short stories that were intermittently weaved throughout 9 sections of the book. My favorite short story was Santos del Infierno, although Janey in Amber reminded me of a few people I know... Overall this was a great book. It was an easy shorter read, but definitely kept you on your toes. I recommend this to all who like a good horror read every now and again :)

Promised to the cloister, the free-spirited Lady Mercia returns home before her final vows for her sister Rowena’s wedding to a Welsh prince. But fate intervenes when she finds a badly wounded man washed up upon the shore.

Unable to resist his fevered pleas for her help, she hides him amongst the caves she played in as a child. And there, as she nurses the handsome stranger back to health, she discoverers a passion for him she cannot resist. Knowing she is promised to God and will never know the touch of man, Mercy gives in to her heart’s desire and her body’s craving.

On his way to his betrothed, Lady Rowena, Prince Rhodri of Dinefwr is shipwrecked and badly wounded, with no memory of who he is. But he does not care; an angel of Mercy has come to claim his mind, body, soul, and--soon--his heart.

Yet fate intervenes again when Rhodri regains his memory and realizes his one true love is the sister of his betrothed. Though honor bound to marry a woman he has never met, Rhodri’s heart belongs to Mercy.

Can Mercy and Rhodri find a way to be together without sacrificing their honor...?

This was a nice quick read that I found for free on Amazon. When I downloaded it I did not realize that it was part of a series, but that did not detract from the story line in my opinion since the author did a very good job of describing the characters and story line. This historical romance kind of reminds me of Cinderella with a few twists and turns. It was too short to get fully invested in the characters but had a good enough story line to keep me hooked for the duration of the book. The rest of the series will be going in my "to read if I have time" pile.

Yet another amazing short story by the Author! This series is about Tiffany and her brother Marcus and best friend Violet going to the school that Tiffany and Marcus' dad teaches at on another planet. There are MANY twists and turns including the introduction of a new race of characters. Another series that I can't wait for the author to finish :)

Battles of the Heart By Beth Wright

Vollians appear to be sexy, hot, slightly buffed warrior women. Do not be miss lead for they are not as they appear. Watch, learn, and enjoy as humans explore this new world. What will happen to them? Will these erotic warriors bring joy or pain to their lives? How will the humans survive the dangers of this untamed world?

This is definitely a genre of books that I don't read too often. I have read several other books by the author so I was intrigued to see what she had come up with this time. Her imagination is incredible and her writing is addictive. This book has some explicit scenes but they draw you into the story line and keep you reading. The characters are amazing yet again and so well described that you feel like you know them personally. Definitely a good read if you are into the erotic genre.

Sorceurian Dragonier Blackthorn Part 1 By Beth Wright

A new race is created by evil Sorceurians to kill their enemies in the world of Zoctornyia.
Two young sisters end up walking through a portal into another world. They soon learn to not trust these new men. Thrown into the dungeons and waiting for some way of escape. What will become of them? Who will help them? What future awaits them?
This is a short prequel of this series.

This short story series by the author has had a very good beginning. It is VERY short but the writing is such that you are hooked from page 2. After getting lost in the woods, the girls find a portal that transports them to a castle. They are captured and held among other prisoners, each with a different fate chosen for them. I definitely can't wait for the author to finish this series so I can find out what happens to Rebecca and Steph.

Zoctornyia (Malver Part 1) by Beth Wright

Malver turns to his father."You must stay hidden son. For if she sees you, she will be frightened off," his father says as both of them divert their eyes back to the young female sitting by the river.
His heart sings out to hers. A longing he has never felt before. He feels the need to touch her. It builds as her face turns more his way.
His father lightly taps his shoulder. He turns and notices the leader guards walking towards them.
The one stops beside Malvar.
Did you mate her yet?
He drifts his eyes back to the young beauty. His sigh tells the guards his answer.
You have been coming here for four months now, yet you have not sedduced her to mate you.

This is another short story series that I received from the Author. The story line is great! It has some of the same characters as Vultar's series but the author introduces new characters as well as the usual twists and turns that make her stories so much fun to read!! Definitely can't wait for her to finish this series :)

Zoctornyia (Vultar's Heart, Body and Soul Mate Series One Collector's Edition) by Beth Wright

This is Vultar's Heart, Body and Soul Mate Parts one through four of series one combined. It also has some descriptions at the end of it.

Elizabeth was a normal 18yr old female. With a very boring live, till she got kidnapped and taken to a whole new world. Zoctornyia appears to look like Earth in many ways. But in the end they are different in lots of ways. She meets the love of her life. Then is placed into all kinds of trouble. Meeting friends, new family, and enemies, this story has surprise after surprise thrown into her lap. What will become of this young human? Who will she be able to trust in the long run? Why are all the men of this world so sexy and buff? Explore the world of Zoctornyia through her eyes. Learn as she learns, feel the pain, happiness, and laughter come out of the book and into your own thoughts.

First off I have to say that this is not usually a type of book that I would get "into" since the whole "other worlds" thing doesn't really float my boat, but holy moly!  I was hooked from the beginning lines so I'm so glad I was lucky enough to receive this short story ebook from the Author after reading Part 1 of the series.
It starts out with Elizabeth going in the basement after hearing noises and being knocked out cold by the 3 guys down there. She ends up in a dungeon where she meets Vultar (swoon!!!) and his son Tronarc, whose "people" end up breaking all of them out of the jail. In the process Vultar completely mesmerizes Elizabeth (and me!) and tells her that they are soul-mates, that his name for her is Setiana, and that he will never let any harm come to her. There are many twists and turns, including Setiana's pregnancy/childbirth and many battles. It is action packed from start to finish! This short story is definitely an amazingly unique find :)

DANCING WITH A VAMPIRE: A Paranormal Romance by Anthony Auriemma, Carolyn Chambers Clark

In this young adult paranormal romance, a spunky teen, forced to enter a national dance contest must avoid the temptations of her vampire partner and the pressures of being on weekly TV if she hopes to survive.

Seventeen-year-old Delilah Jones doesn’t know a steamy tango from a sensual rumba. She's never competed with outrageous teen couples desperate to win a competition and willing to do anything to survive, or dealt with the weekly pressure of knowing she could be eliminated at any moment. She’s never had to dance in front of anyone, let alone before a live television audience of millions or live in a Gothic castle where she's sure her dance partner is a vampire. When she meets handsome Hendrik Court, she has no idea what she's in for. Dancing against his gorgeous body day after day leaves her no option but to want more of him.

Hendrik Court tries to conceal his attraction for the virgin, Delilah. When he suggests they become voyeurs and peek at the liaisons of their dance teachers, both of them become aroused. This old soul has had many lovers in his many lives, but Delilah offers a fresh and untouched flower complete with her nectar of love. When an old flame of Hendrik's uses all her tricks to drive them apart, he reaches across all the centuries of knowledge to choose whether lust or love will win.

I'm not sure how to describe this book. The beginning story line was great. I really got into the book with the author's descriptions of events. But once the competition started it kind of went downhill from there. I do have to admit that there were several parts that I just skimmed through since it was pretty much the same lines over and over. There were quite a few grammatical and spelling errors but it didn't really detract from reading too badly. Overall it was an okay story. Just could use less of the "fluff" during the competition.

Haunted by Willow Cross

Cover for 'Haunted'

Have you ever heard something go bump in the night and wondered if someone was there? Only to go looking for the cause of the noise and find nothing at all. Or how about unexplainably feeling like you’re being watched when you’re completely alone? Things disappearing for no reason or strange ghostly footsteps in the hall?

This book is a collage of short stories about a few of the otherworldly experiences I’ve had. Although they are not movie worthy, you may find them interesting. All the stories are %100 true. Nothing has been added for dramatic effect.

After reading Oceans of Red Volume 1, I could not help but jump towards this book! Willow has a way of writing that makes her books totally addicting! Each of these short tales of hauntings were "spooky" yet hilarous at the same time. I love how she incorporated stories where she was completely at ease with the "others" and stories where she was actually afraid herself! My favorite was the last story about the "Blue Girl" in the older house. Every time I move I am always curious to find what was left behind, although I have never found anything as fun as that painting! This is definitely a fun read for the Halloween holiday.
