Barely Alive by Bonnie R. Paulson Blog Tour Review/Character Interview

SYNOPSIS:
In twelve weeks, seventeen-year-old Paul Ledger will be dead. At least he hopes so. Paul is trapped in the worst cult the United States has ever seen. Infected with a zombie virus, symptoms culminate in a dead body but thriving mind over a course of twelve weeks. If he doesn’t earn the final death he longs for, he’ll be chained in a basement facility, moaning for human flesh for eternity. Sent out to kidnap girls for food, toys, or whatever the boss wants, Paul nabs Heather McCain. He’s not a fan of humans as a general rule, but even his graying skin and insatiable hunger for her flesh don’t stop her from reaching out to him. Give him the second chance he doesn’t know he needs. Overcome by his cravings, Paul bites her delectable skin. Amazingly, she doesn’t develop the zombie-like side effects. When the boss discovers Heather’s immunity, he gives Paul an ultimatum – deliver up Heather and her family to continue the research or watch as Paul’s brother suffers the zombie fate. Paul has a chance to endure his short zombie existence knowing his brother is safe. But he’ll have to sacrifice Heather to do it.

***This is a MATURE YA themed series. There are adult themes and strong language.***

My thoughts:

When asked to give an honest review of this book for this tour, I was a bit skeptical. I mean, come on...another zombie book? But boy oh boy am I glad that I took a chance on it!! This is the first book that I have read from the author so I didn't know what to expect. Her writing style is just so addictive! I started out reading it on my computer and ended up finishing on my phone. And loved it so much that I read the next book, Falling Apart, on my phone as well! The characters are fairly well developed, the story line is unique and fast paced, and you will be left wanting more from the author! I can't wait to finish this series :)

Character Interview with Heather:
• What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I got Paul to like me, that and I’m immune to a virus, well, I guess that’s not really an achievement, but it makes me feel special.
• What is your current state of mind?

Nervous, I feel like I’m on autopilot as I’m trying to keep ahead of the game with Dominic, Paul, and his brother. I don’t know if I’ll ever be safe again and quite honestly, with Paul, I don’t know if the butterflies in my stomach are a bad thing.
• When and where were you the happiest?

At my grandmother’s in northern Idaho during the summer. I used to have a blast picking huckleberries and swimming in the small lake. Nothing like it. And the summers are so much better than the heat in Vegas. Yuck.

• What is your greatest fear?

That I’m not good enough. It doesn’t matter for what or who, I’m just afraid of never being good enough for something. What if I’m not good enough for Paul, or my Grandma Jean, or the kids at school? I’m never good enough in my head, you know?

• Which living person do you most despise?

Dominic. He’s evil. I mean EVIL.

• What is the quality you most like in a man?
Persistent. Dogged persistent and perseverance. Paul has them by the ton.

• What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

My inability to keep it together when things get out of control. I tend to cry when I’m overwhelmed but I still do my best.
• What do you consider the most overrated virtue?Patience. I don’t have it and I don’t care if others do either.

• On what occasions do you lie?

When my life depends on it. I hate to say it, but facing the leader of the zombies has made me lie… ugh, I hate that.

• How would you like to die?

In Paul’s arms. I love him.
Don’t tell him though okay? It might scare him off.

Thank you for having me. This was fun. Next time, let’s play truth or dare!
